I have decided to enter Pencilclubs contest for a Famous Painting portrait. The point of it is to redraw a famous painting/portrait BUT instead of drawing the original person, one should draw a celebritie. I chose to paint two celebrities - Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt usind van Eyck's painting [link] Hopefuly you'll fid it funny
I have to admitt drawing faces was kind of hard. The whole painting is 42x31 cm so the faces are very small - 3 cm long. It was not easy. Here is what I wrote after the first "sketch" over a month ago "Frankly, at first I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. The first thought was - Mona Lisa, but the second thought was "haha she's been used so many times it just got boring." Then I thougt of Arnolfini Marriage - the painting I really like although I prefer different ways of depicting people, but this one is so detailed, I just love it. And I'm also aware that I'm not the first one to use it as an inspiration. I didn't know at first who I could paint there. I thought of a famous polish couple, but that'd be rather silly since most of you wouldn't know them. Then I thought of Brad and Angelina but instantly gave it up, since there's been too much fuss about them lately nad it'd be like painting Mona Lisa in a way. And then I read about her being pregnant. I just couldn't resist. Sorry, all I am risking is people to say I am boring ;D Anyway, I think a lot will depend on the quality of the drawing Many people have been arguing wheather Mrs Arnolfi was or wasn't pregnant in this painting. Generally it's said she's not. But drawing Angelina in her place can give it a different impression, don't you think? Hopefully people will find it funny" |

did you leave the two hands unshaded for a special reason? It looks a bit too white to be natural, so.. just wondering.

"That the hands of the sisters Death and Night incessantly softly wash again and ever again, this soiled world."
.Walt Whitman.
BTW, I'm in the "not pregnant" camp for the painting. In those days, even if she had been pregnant, Van Eyck NEVER would have publicized it. Also, if you look at Van Eyck's other paintings, especially his nudes, he draws all women in that kind of poochy stomach way.
PS -- did you do anything in the circles surrounding the mirror? The drawing is too small to see.

This is...so...great. I mean, first of all, I LOVE this painting. When I saw this drawing in thumbnail size on somebody else's favorites, I thought - wow, this person has done a great job. But then I read the title, and then I looked at it in full view, and I just couldn't stop giggling. Beautifully done.
